Honeybees and Beekeeping

Evening Talk

Monday 17th June

7.45pm

The Fold, 72 Laindon Road, Billericay CM12 9LD

A talk by Ian Grant, Education Officer, Chelmsford Bee Keepers Association

Ian’s Talk will look at several pollinating insects and why they are essential for the environment and food production. He will explain how the honey bee operates, the function of each caste and how the democracy of the colony has evolved.  Bee keeping has been part of human activity for centuries, so Ian will give a brief history of bee keeping and how today’s bee keepers look after the bees. And, perhaps most importantly, how and when the honey crop is harvested and prepared for our delight!

Ian has been keeping bees for 20-years and presently has six hives on a local farm. These colonies of bees produce honey which has won prizes at the Chelmsford Bee Keepers Association (BKA) Honey Show. He is the Education Officer of the Chelmsford BKA and regularly visits local schools and young people’s groups as well as WI and Horticultural Societies to talk and inform them about Honey Bees and bee keeping. He is available to collect a swarm of honey bees should they arrive in your garden and advise on how to live with other pollinating insects.
