Events

To ensure an interesting and engaging activity for all attendees, we limit the numbers of people who can attend some of our events. Places will be offered to members first and then to non-members if some are still available. Find out more about joining Norsey Wood Society here.

Introduction to British Raptors

Evening Talk

Monday 16th June 19.45pm

The Fold, 72 Laindon Road, Billericay CM12 9LD

Speaker: Alasdair Greenyer, Falconer

An informal, interactive and sometimes humorous introduction into the recognition, biology and conservation of British Birds of Prey. From the largest eagles to the smallest falcons.

Designed as a Talk to encourage a better understanding and, therefore, enjoyment of the majestic world of Raptors. From what a Kestrel is really watching and looking for, to busting some popular myths about owls.

Open to all, no need to book.

Small Mammals

Sunday 13th July 08.30am - 11.00am

Norsey Wood

We will be setting humane Longworth traps overnight to sample the species of mice, voles and shrews in Norsey Wood. It will be an earlier start in order to minimise the length of time the animals spend in the traps. Join Steve and Luke Owen for this important annual monitoring session.

Currently open to members only.

Bats and Moths

Wednesday 16th July 21.00pm - 11.00pm

Norsey Wood

The first of two annual recording sessions where we monitor bat species at dusk, using sound recording equipment. After dark, we turn our attention to the light trap to study the variety of moths it attracts.
Ken and Steve to lead.

Currently open to members only.

Dragon and Damselflies

Sunday 17th August 10.00am - 12.00am

Norsey Wood

An annual event, where we sample a pond or two to check for the larval stage, before observing the adults as they criss-cross the water in breeding mode or hawk up and down the rides in search of prey.
Alan Shearring will lead.

Currently open to members only.

Bats and Moths

Wednesday 27th August 20.30pm - 10.30pm

Norsey Wood

This later session may reveal different species, particularly with the Moths.
Ken and Steve to lead.

Ferns, Mosses and Liverworts

Sunday 21st September 10.00am - 12.00pm

Festive Woodland Walk

Sunday 14th December 10.00am - 12.30pm

Norsey Wood

The wood is dormant at this time, and seems to echo the peace and tranquility of the Festive Period. Join us on a walk as we look for signs of nature and learn how it copes with winter. Seasonal refreshments will follow in the cosy Norsey Wood Centre.
